For fifty years, Uchumi has been Kenya's trusted supermarket. Under determined new leadership, we are rebuilding β branch by branch, supplier by supplier, Kenyan by Kenyan.
Incorporated in 1975 under the Companies Act of Kenya, Uchumi opened its first three branches in 1976. "Uchumi" β meaning economy in Swahili β has always stood for accessible, quality retail for every Kenyan family.
Uchumi Supermarkets PLC was founded in 1975 as a public limited company, quickly becoming a trendsetter in low pricing while maintaining high standards. For decades, "Uchumi" was synonymous with quality, accessible retail across Kenya and East Africa.
Following significant challenges from 2013, Uchumi entered a Court-approved Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) in 2020, revised by creditors in 2023. Under new leadership, we have returned to profitability for the first time since 2014, completed eight years of outstanding audits, and reopened branches with fully stocked shelves.
Uchumi's reconstituted board brings together finance, legal, and business expertise to guide the company's recovery and long-term strategy. Click a director to view their full profile.
Since his appointment in 2023, the CEO has steered the company from the brink of collapse, delivering milestones that had eluded the company for nearly a decade.
The company has made significant milestones in its turnaround. The current management team has been able to accomplish the following:
