A household name
built on Kenyan values

Incorporated in 1975 under the Companies Act of Kenya, Uchumi opened its first three branches in 1976. "Uchumi" β€” meaning economy in Swahili β€” has always stood for accessible, quality retail for every Kenyan family.

Our Story

Half a century of serving Kenya

Uchumi Supermarkets PLC was founded in 1975 as a public limited company, quickly becoming a trendsetter in low pricing while maintaining high standards. For decades, "Uchumi" was synonymous with quality, accessible retail across Kenya and East Africa.

Following significant challenges from 2013, Uchumi entered a Court-approved Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) in 2020, revised by creditors in 2023. Under new leadership, we have returned to profitability for the first time since 2014, completed eight years of outstanding audits, and reopened branches with fully stocked shelves.

CVA Update β€” 2023 Revised Plan

Operating under a Court-Approved, Creditor-Revised CVA

Uchumi operates under a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) β€” a formal, court-approved framework. After the original 2020 CVA failed to be implemented, creditors voted in 2023 to adopt a revised plan. Key elements include the sale of the Kasarani 17-acre property to raise an estimated KES 2.0B, conversion of 50% of creditor debt into Convertible Preferential Shares, and Government/KDC debts restructured into long-term non-interest earning loans. After distributions and conversions, remaining balances would be written off by creditors.
